Hy-Vee will provide 1,000 free anemia screenings in May at select stores throughout its eight-state region.

Health experts estimate that as many as three million Americans have anemia, a condition where the body doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen through the body. The most common form of anemia is iron deficiency anemia, where the body doesn't get enough iron from food to create healthy cells. People with anemia often experience tiredness, weakness and shortness of breath. A Hy-Vee dietitian will perform a simple finger stick to collect a blood sample to determine the risk for anemia and provide results within minutes, the company noted.

Registration is required for the free anemia screening and can be done online. Once registered, a local Hy-Vee dietitian will reach out to schedule a screening based on availability. Free anemia screenings are only available while supplies last and are provided in partnership with Sanguina.
